Split Screen

Split screen refers to a divided display: the screen area is broken up into two or more sections that simultaneously show different content. The term originates from film and video games and is nowadays primarily an operating feature of computers, tablets, and smartphones.

A screen normally shows one thing: a movie, a game, an open application. With split screen, the area is instead divided into several sections. Each section shows something of its own, and everything keeps running at the same time. On a laptop, a text document might sit on the left and a webpage on the right. In a racing game, one player sees the upper half, the other the lower half. The term literally means “split screen” in English and is used the same way in German.

Why two windows side by side are more than a gimmick

The most important reason is comparing and transferring information. Anyone copying numbers from a spreadsheet into an email would otherwise have to constantly switch back and forth. Every switch costs time, and it’s easy to forget what was on the other side in the process. Side by side, both remain visible, which relieves working memory.

In video games, split screen served a completely different function for decades. Before fast internet, it was the only way to play against each other with two or four players. People sat together in front of a television, and the console divided the picture. This form has become rare, since most games today are connected via the internet.

One drawback always remains, however: each section is smaller than the full screen. On a smartphone with a six-inch diagonal, this quickly becomes cluttered. Split screen is therefore especially worthwhile on large displays.

How the device divides the area

Responsible for this is the operating system, meaning the base software of a device such as Windows, Android, or iPadOS. It manages which application may occupy which part of the display area. If you drag a window to the left edge of the screen, the system assigns it the left half and arranges the second application on the right. This feature is called “Snap” in Windows and “Split View” by Apple.

For this to work, an application must be able to handle different window sizes. Programmers call this a responsive layout: menus condense, text columns become narrower, images scale accordingly. Apps that can’t do this can’t even be switched into split mode on some devices.

It’s important to distinguish this from a related case: split screen is different from two monitors connected to one computer. With two monitors, there are two physical devices, whereas here it remains a single display. Another common misconception is that split screen is particularly computationally intensive. Usually that’s not true — only with games is it costly, because the console has to render the scene twice from different viewpoints.

From video calls to AI interfaces

In everyday life, split screen appears constantly, often without the name being used. In a video conference with four participants, the tiled view shows four pictures on one screen. In TV news, you see the anchor and a connected reporter side by side. The split screen used for learning, with video on the left and notes on the right, also belongs to this category.

In tech news, the term comes up especially in connection with foldable smartphones and large tablets. Manufacturers advertise that two or three apps can be used meaningfully at the same time. This is a key selling point for devices that are considerably more expensive than regular smartphones.

Splitting the screen has also become common with AI tools. Many programming environments show program code on the left and the chat with the language model on the right. Image generators display the original and the edited version side by side. The principle is always the same: two things you want to compare or transfer into one another belong in view at the same time.
