Scaled AI Content refers to texts, images, or videos that are generated with the help of Artificial Intelligence in very large quantities and largely automatically. The term comes up mainly when such content floods search engines and social networks in order to capture advertising revenue or reach.

Programs like ChatGPT can write a finished text in seconds. Anyone who automates this doesn’t produce one article, but ten thousand. That is exactly what Scaled AI Content means: content that a machine generates in very large quantities, with almost no human work per piece. This can be advice articles, product descriptions, news summaries, images, or short videos. The term is initially neutral and only describes the quantity. In practice, however, it is mostly used critically, because such content is often meant primarily to generate clicks rather than information.

Why the web is being flooded with it

The calculation behind it is simple. A text written by a human costs, depending on length, a two- to three-digit euro amount. A machine-generated text often costs less than a cent. If every article carries advertising, only a small fraction of the texts need to attract visitors for the whole operation to pay off.

For readers, this is a problem because useful sources get lost in the noise. Anyone searching for a travel question or a medication ends up on pages that sound fluent but that no one has checked. AI models regularly invent details that seem plausible yet are wrong. Among ten thousand texts, no human notices this anymore.

Added to this is an effect experts call model collapse: new AI models are trained on texts from the internet. The more of that itself originates from machines, the more the models learn from their own outputs. Over the long term, this can cause quality to decline.

From the keyword list to the finished portal

The usual process begins with a list of search terms. Tools show what people frequently search for and where there is little competition. Thousands of topics emerge from this list. A script sends each topic as a request to a language model and receives a finished article in return.

After that, everything continues automatically. Images are added by an image generator, headlines and link structures are generated from templates, and the texts are uploaded directly to a website. Some operators additionally run a second AI pass that rewrites the text so it sounds less like a machine. Human review usually doesn’t happen at all, at most on a spot-check basis.

An important distinction: the use of AI alone does not make content Scaled AI Content in the critical sense. Google explicitly distinguishes between AI as a tool and so-called Scaled Content Abuse. What matters is whether someone stands behind the content and whether it provides genuine value. An editor who reviews, corrects, and takes responsibility for an AI draft does not fall under this.

How to recognize such sites

Scaled AI Content is most commonly encountered in search results. Typical are sites that have an article on every conceivable topic, yet show no editorial team, no imprint with real names, and no photos of authors. The tone also stands out: very smooth, lots of bullet lists, few concrete figures or original research.

A second location is social networks. On Facebook and YouTube, pages circulate that post AI images or automatically voiced videos every minute. Some of them reach millions of views. Investigations by organizations such as NewsGuard have also found hundreds of news sites that run practically entirely automatically.

For investors, this topic is relevant because it threatens business models. Publishers lose reach to cheap competition, ad networks have to filter it out, search engines change their rules. Google rolled out multiple updates in 2024 and 2025 that remove mass-produced sites from the index. As a result, a portal can lose almost its entire traffic overnight.
