A search box is the input field into which you type your search query on a website or in an app. It is now considered particularly valuable real estate, because it decides which service gets to answer a question – increasingly an AI instead of a classic list of results.
A search box is the rectangular input field into which you type search terms. You know it from Google, from online shops, from Wikipedia, and from the search field in your browser. The German term for it would simply be Suchfeld or Suchschlitz. In the tech and business press, however, the English word appears more often, especially when it’s about the business behind it. Because the search box is not just a control element, but the place where billions of questions are asked every day. Whoever controls this field controls a very large share of internet traffic.
Why so much money flows around a single input field
Next to the search results are ads, and these make up the bulk of Google’s revenue. Every entry into the search box is thus a potential advertising contact. That explains why Google paid Apple billions of dollars for years just to remain the preset search engine in Safari. It wasn’t the technology that was expensive, but the spot in that small field.
These very payments were at the center of the US antitrust case against Google. The court saw them as a means of keeping competitors away from the search box. In the EU, too, Google had to introduce choice screens on which users can select a different search engine. The assumption behind this: most people never change a default setting, which is exactly why it is so valuable.
Since AI chatbots have existed, the dispute has intensified. If questions increasingly go to ChatGPT or a similar assistant in the future, the classic search box loses significance. That’s why all major providers are building their own input fields into browsers, operating systems, and phones.
What happens between keystroke and results list
Even while you’re typing, the search box sends the letters entered so far to a server. It responds with suggestions, the so-called autocomplete. These suggestions come from frequent queries by other users and from what the service knows about you. They are not a neutral mirror of the world, but a weighted selection.
After submission, the search engine breaks the query down into individual components and tries to detect the intent behind it. Typos are corrected, synonyms are considered. Then a preliminary selection of pages is drawn from a huge index. Only at the end does a ranking process sort these pages according to presumed usefulness.
Modern search boxes additionally work with language models, i.e. programs that can understand text and formulate it themselves. They combine several sources into one answer that appears above the results list. For users this is convenient. For websites it is precarious, because fewer people click through – an effect known as zero-click search.
From the shop search field to the address bar
You encounter search boxes in a great many places, not just with search engines. In an online shop, the field only searches the shop’s own catalog. On Amazon, this search field determines which products a merchant can sell at all. There, too, there are paid placements that look like normal results and are only marked as an ad in small print.
Your browser’s address bar is also a search box. It accepts both internet addresses and search terms and forwards the latter to the preset search engine. This is precisely why this default setting is so economically contested. You can usually change it in the settings within a few seconds.
In news reports today, the term is often read in connection with the transformation of search. Phrases like “the battle for the search box” then don’t mean the field itself, but the question of which service gets the users' queries. A related but narrower term is the search engine: it is the technology behind it, with the search box merely its visible entrance.
