A paraborg is a human who works closely with technology without that technology being built into their body. The term distinguishes such people from cyborgs, in whom technology is permanently connected to the body.

A paraborg is a human who constantly works with devices that can be set aside at any time. The technology sits next to the body, not inside the body. The word is made up of the Greek “para” for “beside” and the word component “borg.” The latter comes from the term cyborg, meaning a human with permanently built-in technology such as a pacemaker. A paraborg is exactly the counterpart: they rely heavily on their devices, yet remain physically unchanged. Anyone who feels lost without a smartphone and a navigation app is already experiencing this state on a small scale.

Why the distinction from the cyborg matters

For decades, science fiction has shaped a particular image. The merging of human and machine was imagined as an implant, as a chip in the head or as an artificial eye. In reality, development is taking a different course. The devices that change our thinking and working the most are the ones we carry in our pocket.

The term paraborg makes this difference visible. It shows that deep dependence on technology does not require surgery. A surgeon who can no longer operate without a robotic arm is just as dependent as someone with an implant. The only difference is that he can leave the device behind in the evening and go home.

This matters for the debate about artificial intelligence. Many discussions revolve around distant future scenarios involving brain interfaces. The paraborg perspective directs attention to what is already happening today. The decisive question is not what gets built into our bodies. It is which abilities we hand over to external systems.

Tool, habit, and outsourced ability

For a tool to become a paraborg relationship, three things must come together. The device must be constantly available. It must respond to the user, meaning it takes in data and reacts to it. And the user must permanently hand off a task to the device.

A hammer only fulfills the first condition. It does not get smarter the more often it is used. A language model, by contrast, adapts its answers to the user’s phrasing. A fitness tracker collects data for months and derives training plans from it. Over time, a cycle emerges: the human supplies data, the system supplies decisions in return.

Experts call this outsourced cognition, meaning thinking that partly takes place outside the head. Knowledge is no longer fully stored in memory but is distributed between human and device. A common misconception is to see this as mere convenience. What is measurable is rather a shift: the ability to find and evaluate information grows. The ability to recall it without aids declines.

From delivery driver to programmer

In everyday working life, this pattern is already widespread. Package couriers follow routes calculated for them by software. Warehouse workers have their paths announced to them via headphones. In both cases, a system does the planning, and the human carries it out. This is exactly where the criticism comes in, because the distribution of roles can tip.

In software development, a friendlier variant is visible. Programming assistants suggest entire lines of code as you type. Many developers describe working noticeably slower without this tool. The same applies to translators, radiologists, and lawyers who have software pre-sort contracts for them.

In the news, the term itself rarely appears literally, but the underlying topic is ever-present. Whenever reports cover dependence on AI systems or the degree of automation in professions, they are talking about paraborgs. Anyone who knows the term recognizes more quickly what is really being argued about. It is usually not about the technology itself, but about the question of who ultimately makes the decision.
