Android Auto is a service by Google that displays content from a phone on the screen inside a car, presenting it in a heavily simplified form. The car's screen thus becomes a control surface for navigation, music, and messages, while the phone itself can stay in your pocket.

Android Auto is a service from the company Google that lets a phone share the screen inside a car. You connect the phone to the vehicle either by cable or wirelessly. The built-in display then shows large tiles for maps, music, and messages. The car itself gains no new technical capabilities—it merely displays what the phone computes. It’s important to distinguish this from the car’s own operating system: Android Auto doesn’t replace it but overlays it for the duration of the drive. Once you unplug the phone, the manufacturer’s normal interface returns.

Why carmakers hand over the screen

Cars are built over many years and then often driven for more than a decade afterward. Software ages very quickly during that time. A built-in navigation system from 2016 often no longer recognizes today’s roads and charging stations. The phone in your pocket, by contrast, is usually only two years old and constantly up to date. This is precisely the gap Android Auto fills.

For manufacturers, this is still a delicate matter. Whoever opens up the screen loses the direct line to the customer. Google then sees where people are driving and which services they use. Some companies have therefore tried to offer only their own systems. Buyer pressure was usually stronger, though, because many people won’t even consider a car without this feature.

There’s also a safety argument. A driver tapping on their phone while at the wheel is dangerous. A large display at eye level with a few clear buttons is less distracting. Authorities and insurers view this positively, even though it doesn’t make distraction disappear entirely.

What happens when you connect in the car

Technically, almost all the work is still done by the phone. It calculates the route, plays the music, and generates the finished image. This image is sent to the car, similar to how a laptop drives a projector. Conversely, the car’s screen reports back where a finger has tapped. Rotary dials, steering wheel buttons, and the microphone also pass their signals along to the phone.

With the wired connection, everything runs over USB, which charges the battery at the same time. With the wireless version, the car sets up its own small Wi-Fi network, because Bluetooth would be far too slow for video images. Bluetooth is still needed, though, namely for the initial handshake and for phone calls. The wireless version is more convenient but uses noticeably more battery.

Not every phone app is allowed to participate. Google imposes strict rules: mainly navigation, audio, messaging, and calls are permitted. Videos or games don’t appear while driving. Messages are also usually read aloud rather than displayed, and replies are dictated. The goal is always to keep your eyes off the road for as short a time as possible.

From rental cars to antitrust authorities

In everyday life, you’ll encounter Android Auto in almost every newer mid-range car. In a rental car or your parents' car, it’s enough to plug in your own phone, and the familiar map appears. For iPhones, Apple offers a very similar service called CarPlay. Nearly all models today support both simultaneously; what matters is simply which phone happens to be plugged in.

The term also comes up in business news for a different reason. Competition authorities are examining whether Google disadvantages third-party navigation apps. In Italy, there was already a case involving a charging-station app that went all the way to the European Court of Justice. Such cases are of interest to investors because they show how much control platforms are allowed to exert over access to their screens.

A common misconception is confusing Android Auto with Android Automotive. The latter name refers to a full-fledged operating system that runs permanently in the car and doesn’t need a phone. Volvo and Polestar rely on it. Android Auto, on the other hand, remains a guest on the screen that disappears again once the drive is over.
