
Apollo Program
The Apollo Program was the American space program of the 1960s and early 1970s that first landed humans on the Moon. Between 1969 and 1972, twelve astronauts walked on the lunar surface.
The Apollo Program was a major American space endeavor. The government space agency NASA ran it from 1961 to 1972. The declared goal was to put humans on the Moon and bring them back alive. On July 20, 1969, this was achieved for the first time: Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stood on the lunar surface. In total, six landings succeeded, and twelve people walked around there. It was one of the most expensive civilian projects any state has ever undertaken.
The Race to the Moon
Apollo emerged in the middle of the Cold War. The USA and the Soviet Union were politically hostile toward each other at the time. Both wanted to prove that their system was technically superior. The Soviet Union was initially ahead: it launched the first satellite in 1957 and the first human into space in 1961. President John F. Kennedy responded with the promise of a Moon landing before 1970.
The effort was enormous. At its peak, about 400,000 people worked on the program, spread across government agencies and thousands of supplier companies. Costs amounted to roughly 25 billion dollars at the time. Converted to today’s purchasing power, that is well over 200 billion. At times, Apollo consumed more than four percent of the entire US federal budget.
This had consequences for technology far beyond spaceflight. Apollo drove the development of small, reliable computer chips, since there was hardly any room or weight allowance on board. For years, NASA was the largest buyer of such circuits. That is precisely why Apollo still comes up in tech debates today: as an example of how a major government project can jump-start an entire industry.
Saturn V, Command Module, and Lunar Module
The centerpiece was the Saturn V rocket. It stood 110 meters tall and remains one of the most powerful rockets ever built. It consisted of three stages that ignited one after another and were then jettisoned. The reason is simple: empty tanks are dead weight you don’t want to keep carrying.
Two connected vehicles flew to the Moon. The Command and Service Module remained in orbit around the Moon, with one astronaut on board. The smaller Lunar Module separated and landed with two astronauts. For the return flight, only the upper part of the Lunar Module lifted off again and docked with the waiting module. This division saved a tremendous amount of fuel but was risky: a failed docking maneuver could not have been rescued by anyone.
Notable is the onboard computer, the Apollo Guidance Computer. It had less memory than a simple remote control today. Nevertheless, it calculated course corrections and steered the landing. Its operating system could prioritize tasks by importance and abort less important ones. This is exactly what saved the first landing, when the computer reported an overload shortly before touchdown.
Apollo as a Benchmark in Today’s Debates
The term rarely comes up in spaceflight itself these days, but constantly as a point of comparison. When companies or governments announce a very large technology venture, they like to speak of the Apollo Program for this or that. The comparison regularly comes up in cancer research, climate protection, and the expansion of AI data centers. The meaning is always the same: a clear goal, a fixed date, and a great deal of money.
In financial news, Apollo often serves as a benchmark for scale. When a company pours double-digit billions into chip factories or data centers, this is readily compared to Apollo’s costs. Such comparisons are flawed, however. Apollo had a single, measurable goal that could be checked off. With more open-ended tasks like better AI, nobody knows exactly when it will be finished.
A common misconception is that Apollo permanently accelerated spaceflight. In fact, the program was halted in 1972, even though further flights were planned. Political interest waned as soon as the race was won. No human has set foot on the Moon since. Only NASA’s current Artemis program aims to do so again, this time with private companies as partners.
