Remote Desktop

Remote Desktop means operating a computer from another device, even though it is located somewhere else entirely. The interface of the remote machine appears on your own screen, and your mouse and keyboard control it as if you were sitting right in front of it.

Remote Desktop translates literally as “distant desk.” What is meant is the screen content of a computer that you see in front of you when you switch it on: the wallpaper, the folders, the open programs. With a remote desktop, you see exactly this interface of a foreign computer on your own device. That computer can be sitting in an office while you yourself are at home. You move the mouse, type on your own keyboard, and the far-away computer responds accordingly. All the programs continue to run on the remote machine the whole time, not on your own device.

Why companies no longer take their computers with them

The practical benefit became clear at the latest when many employees started working from home. The work computer stayed in the office while the person sat at their kitchen table. With a remote desktop, almost nothing changes for the work itself. The same programs, the same files, the same settings are all still there.

For companies, there is a second important point: the data stays where it is. Only images of the screen are transmitted via the remote desktop, not the files themselves. If the personal laptop is lost, no company documents are stored on it. The IT department also only needs to install security updates on the central computers.

A third reason is computing power. Demanding tasks such as 3D design or training AI models require expensive hardware. Such machines are located in data centers and are used by many people one after another. A simple notebook is then completely sufficient as a window onto this machine.

What is transmitted between the two computers

Technically, a constant exchange takes place in both directions. The remote computer continuously sends images of its screen, similar to a video. Your own device sends back where the mouse was moved and which keys were pressed. Together, both create the impression that you are sitting directly in front of it.

For this to feel smooth, the entire image is not sent every single time. Only the areas that have changed are transmitted. If you type a text, only a few pixels change. A full-screen video, on the other hand, changes everything, which is why it quickly starts to stutter over a weak connection.

The rules governing this exchange are called a protocol. The best known is RDP, Microsoft's Remote Desktop Protocol. There is also VNC and solutions like TeamViewer or AnyDesk. The connection is encrypted, meaning the data is coded illegibly while in transit. Nevertheless, it holds true: a remote desktop openly accessible on the internet with a weak password is a popular entry point for attacks.

From support calls to cloud graphics cards

This technology is most commonly encountered during technical support. An employee asks for permission to look at your screen. Afterward, the mouse cursor seems to move by itself while the problem is fixed. That is exactly what a remote desktop is, just with the roles reversed.

In companies, the technology is often invisibly built into everyday work. Some employees work all day on a computer located in a data center. Their device on the desk is then little more than a screen and a keyboard. This variant is called Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, or VDI for short.

A common misconception is confusing this with cloud services like Google Docs. There, a program specifically built for that purpose runs in the browser. With Remote Desktop, on the other hand, you transmit the complete operating system of a real computer. That is why both terms often appear side by side in business news, yet they mean different things. Game streaming also works on the same basic principle: the game runs in the data center, and only the picture arrives.
