Layer (Image Editing)

A layer is a single image plane in an editing program that sits above or below other layers and can be edited separately from them. Only when combined do all layers together form the visible image.

Imagine several transparent sheets lying exactly on top of one another. On the bottom one lies a photo, on the next one a piece of text, and on the topmost one a logo. Viewed from above, it looks like a single image. Yet you can pull out, move, or discard each sheet individually without damaging the others. This exact principle is called a layer in image editing programs. Programs like Photoshop, GIMP, Figma, or Canva build their entire way of working on this concept.

Why professionals never paint directly onto the photo

Without layers, every change would be permanent. Anyone who paints text directly into the pixels of a photo has overwritten the original pixels. If you later want to move the text, you have to painstakingly reconstruct the hole underneath. With a separate text layer, the text is just one sheet higher up. You drag it to a different spot, and the photo underneath was never affected.

Professionals call this way of working non-destructive: the source material remains untouched. This saves not only nerves but also money. In an agency, a poster is often revised ten times because the client wants a different color or a different font. If everything is kept in separate layers, such a change takes minutes instead of hours.

A second advantage is collaboration. A file with cleanly named layers can be opened by someone else, who can immediately understand how the image is built. A flattened file without layers, on the other hand, is like a fully baked cake: you can see the result, but you can no longer get at the ingredients.

Stacking order, opacity, and masks

Every layer has a fixed position in the stack. Whatever lies further up covers whatever lies below it. This order can be changed at any time, usually by dragging in a layer list at the edge of the image. If you move the logo below the photo, it disappears behind the image. The program recalculates the visible view with every change.

On top of that come three settings that are set per layer. Opacity determines how transparent a layer is, given as a percentage. At 50 percent, the layer underneath shows through halfway. The blend mode determines how the colors of two layers are computed together, for instance lightening or darkening. And a layer mask hides parts of a layer without deleting them.

Masks are the most important element for non-destructive working. A mask is a grayscale image attached to the layer: white means visible, black means invisible. If you accidentally erase too much, you simply paint it back in with white. The pixels themselves were never touched. In the end, the result is usually exported as JPEG or PNG, at which point all layers are merged into one flat image.

Layers in AI tools and in everyday life

The layer principle crops up more often than you’d think. Video editing programs stack tracks for video, music, and subtitles following the same pattern. Map apps overlay traffic or satellite imagery as an additional layer. Presentation software, too, arranges objects in a front-to-back order.

Especially interesting is the connection to image generators, meaning AI programs that create images from a text description. Pure generators initially return a flat image with no layers. Newer tools therefore automatically place the generated subject on its own layer and separate it from the background. This is exactly what the cutout function means, which many phone apps now offer with a single tap.

A common misconception: layers in image editing have nothing to do with the layers of a neural network. There, a layer refers to a computational layer within an AI model. Same word, completely different context. Anyone reading job postings or tutorials should therefore always pay attention to the context.
