Largest Contentful Paint

Largest Contentful Paint is a metric for web pages. It indicates how many seconds it takes for the largest visible element on a page to finish loading – usually an image or a heading.

When you open a website, the content doesn’t appear all at once. First the area is blank, then texts and images gradually show up. Largest Contentful Paint measures when the largest visible element on the screen has finished rendering. That’s usually a large photo at the top or a bold headline. The value is given in seconds and is counted from the moment you clicked the link. The English name roughly means: the painting of the largest content.

Why Google looks at these seconds

In the past, a page’s loading time was measured until literally everything was finished. But that says little about how fast a page actually feels. For you as a visitor, what counts is the moment you see the actual content. That’s exactly the moment Largest Contentful Paint tries to capture. That’s why this value is considered a better measure of perceived speed.

Google has made Largest Contentful Paint one of the three so-called Core Web Vitals. These are three metrics Google uses to assess a page’s user-friendliness. They factor into ranking, meaning the order of search results. A value under 2.5 seconds is considered good. Between 2.5 and 4 seconds, the page needs improvement; above that, it’s considered poor.

For businesses, this translates directly into money. Studies from online shops show: the longer visitors wait for the first content, the more of them leave again. A news portal or a shop therefore loses readers and buyers if the value is too high. That’s why this metric regularly appears in reports from marketing and technical departments.

What slows down the largest element

The browser decides for itself which element counts as the largest. It only looks at the area visible without scrolling. Candidates include images, video thumbnails, and larger text blocks. If something changes while the page is loading, the measurement can still jump to a different element. Only once you click or scroll does the final value become fixed.

Delays occur at several points. First, the server has to respond at all, which takes time with overloaded or distant servers. Then the browser has to read the page description and notice that it still needs an image. Only after that does it download that image. An uncompressed photo of several megabytes can, by itself, add seconds to this step.

Developers have established countermeasures for this. They shrink images and save them in more efficient file formats. They distribute files across servers around the world so the distance stays short. And they tell the browser in advance which image to fetch first. A common misconception, by the way, is that a fast personal computer will save the score. Measurements are often taken on an average phone using mobile data, and there things look noticeably worse.

Where you’ll come across this metric

The easiest way to see the value is in Google’s PageSpeed Insights tool. There you enter any web address and get an evaluation. The Chrome browser also comes with a built-in audit feature called Lighthouse. Both show you Largest Contentful Paint in seconds, color-coded from green to red. You can try this out with your own favorite website.

In tech industry news, the term mostly comes up in connection with search engine optimization. When Google changes its ranking rules, trade media report on it. Website builder providers also advertise that they deliver especially good values. You shouldn’t confuse Largest Contentful Paint with the other two Core Web Vitals, though: one measures how quickly the page responds to clicks, the other how much content still shifts around while loading.
