Drone Swarm

A drone swarm is a large group of unmanned aerial vehicles that coordinate with one another and thereby act as a single unit. Instead of steering each drone individually, a human only specifies the goal, and the software distributes the tasks itself.

A drone is a small aircraft without a pilot on board. A drone swarm is a large group of such aircraft traveling together. What makes it special is not the number, but the coordination: the drones constantly exchange data and adapt their behavior to one another. A human does not steer each individual drone with a remote control. He only specifies a goal, for example “search this stretch of forest,” and the group divides the work among itself. The model for this is flocks of birds and schools of fish, in which no one gives commands either.

Why many cheap drones are worth more than one expensive one

A single large aircraft is expensive and fragile. If it fails, the entire mission is over. A swarm of a hundred cheap drones behaves differently. If ten of them fail, the remaining ninety carry on. Experts call this property redundancy: important functions exist multiple times over.

On top of that there is a simple computational advantage. A hundred drones cover an area roughly a hundred times faster than a single one. In a search for missing persons, that is exactly what decides between success and failure. Speed also matters in agriculture, when a field needs to be checked before the rain sets in.

Militarily, the topic is especially controversial. Swarms can overwhelm defense systems, because these can only engage a few targets at once. Since the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, the technology has therefore been a constant fixture in the news. Human rights organizations are calling for clear rules requiring that a human must decide on every use of a weapon.

Rules instead of central control

A swarm usually has no leader. Each drone follows a few simple rules that run on its own small onboard computer. Three are typical: keep your distance from your neighbors, fly roughly in their direction, stay close to the group. From these simple rules, an orderly overall pattern emerges. Experts call this emergence, meaning order that arises from the interaction itself rather than being dictated from above.

For this, the drones need two things. First, sensors, meaning measuring devices such as cameras or distance sensors, to detect neighbors and obstacles. Second, radio links among themselves, through which they report position and tasks. If a connection fails, a drone must be able to keep making decisions on its own. This is exactly where machine learning comes in: software that has learned from many simulations how to behave sensibly in unclear situations.

A common misconception is that a swarm is simply a formation. In a light show in the sky, each drone often flies a pre-calculated route without any contact with the others. This looks impressive, but it is only a choreographed sequence. A real swarm reacts to situations that no one planned in advance.

From the fire department to the news cycle

In civilian everyday life, swarms are encountered mainly in rescue operations. After earthquakes, groups of drones search debris fields using thermal imaging cameras. Fire departments use them to get an up-to-date map of fire hotspots during wildfires. Surveying large construction sites and inspecting power lines are also increasingly carried out this way.

In business news, the term comes up from two directions. Defense contractors and young tech companies like Anduril or Helsing are receiving contracts worth billions. At the same time, authorities are debating countermeasures, since swarms can shut down airports or spy on factories. For investors, the field is therefore attractive and politically risky at the same time.

Legally, much remains unresolved. In the EU, the Drone Regulation governs who may fly where, and generally requires one responsible person per flight. For hundreds of devices flying simultaneously, this logic fits only poorly. Lawmakers are currently working on exactly this gap, which is why the term will appear more frequently in headlines in the coming years.
