
Beta
Beta refers to a version of a program that is already usable but has not yet been fully tested. The maker deliberately releases it to users to find bugs before the final version is published.
Software doesn’t come into being in a single leap, but in stages. First, developers work on a very raw version that only runs in-house. After that comes the beta: a version that already works but still contains bugs. It is deliberately distributed to real users so they can report problems. Only once the reported bugs have been fixed does the finished version appear for everyone. The word itself is the second letter of the Greek alphabet, marking the second testing stage.
Why companies give away unfinished software
No test team can try everything. A program runs on thousands of combinations of devices, operating systems, and internet connections. Users also do things nobody anticipated. A beta is therefore not a sign of sloppiness, but a testing process with a great many participants.
For the company, this is cheaper than discovering bugs after the official launch. Anyone who only fixes a glitch once millions of people have paid for the product loses trust and money. In the beta, something is allowed to break because everyone knows it’s a test run. That’s exactly why the notice is often visibly included in the program’s name.
But there is also an unpleasant side to it. Some providers leave the beta label in place for years, thereby shifting responsibility for bugs onto the testing phase. This is frequently observed with AI products. Critics then say that the public is taking over quality control without being paid for it.
From closed to open testing rounds
There are usually two types of beta. In a closed beta, the maker invites only selected individuals, often a few hundred or thousand. In an open beta, anyone may sign up. The closed round comes first, because early bugs are still crude and one doesn’t want to show them to millions of people.
What matters is what flows back. The program automatically sends reports when it crashes, and users can report problems via a form. Many providers also measure which features are actually used. From this data, a list emerges that is sorted by frequency and severity.
Before the beta comes the alpha, an even more unstable version for internal use. After the beta often follows a release candidate, i.e. a version considered finished and only still being checked. If no serious bug is found there, it becomes the final version. This sequence is not a fixed rule, but a common pattern in the industry.
Beta labels in AI services and games
The term is most commonly encountered with video games. Major titles launch an open beta weeks before release so that the servers can be tested under real load. For mobile apps, one can often voluntarily sign up for test versions in the app stores. Operating systems like Android or iOS also have public beta programs.
In the AI world, the label is especially prevalent. New chatbots, image generators, or assistant features in office programs almost always first appear as beta. There is a reason for this: such systems produce responses that no one can fully predict. The notice about the testing phase is thus also a warning not to adopt results without checking them.
In financial news, the word has a second, completely different meaning. There, beta is a metric indicating how strongly a stock’s price fluctuates compared to the overall market. Anyone reading such reports should therefore pay attention to context. If beta appears next to a product name, it’s about software, not stock market risk.
