Rewind AI is a program for Apple computers made by the company Rewind AI Inc. from San Francisco. It continuously records everything that happens on the screen in the background. In addition, it records audio, for instance during video calls. It stores these recordings and makes them searchable. So later on, one can type: “What was the name of the restaurant my colleague wrote about last week?” The program finds the matching spot and displays it. The company calls this a “personal memory” for the computer.

The appeal of a seamless digital memory

People forget most details of their workday within a few days. You might still remember that a number appeared somewhere, but no longer in which email or document. The usual computer search only helps to a limited extent. It finds files, but not fleeting content such as a briefly opened webpage or a sentence from a video call.

This is exactly the gap Rewind AI aims to close. The claim is that nothing you have ever seen or heard gets lost anymore. Because of this, the product received a lot of attention and money from investors. It is regarded as an early example of so-called AI assistants that accompany the user permanently instead of merely answering individual questions.

At the same time, Rewind AI is a textbook case in the privacy debate. Software that records everything also collects passwords, banking data, and private chats. Critics point out that conversation partners in a video call often have no idea they are being recorded at all. In many countries, including Germany, secretly recording conversations is legally delicate. The manufacturer responds to this with a technical argument, which is explained in the next section.

From screenshot to answerable question

The program takes screenshots at short intervals. These images are heavily compressed so that they take up little space. The manufacturer states that months of recordings thus take up only a few gigabytes. In parallel, text recognition extracts the written words from each image. Speech recognition likewise turns audio recordings into text.

In the end, what results is not a video archive but a large collection of timestamped texts. This collection can be searched like a search engine. For questions posed in plain language, a language model is additionally used, that is, an AI system that understands and formulates text. It is presented with the matching results and writes an answer based on them. This principle, search plus text generator, is widespread in the industry.

Crucial for privacy is the storage location. The recordings are stored encrypted on the user’s hard drive, not on external servers. Only for the answers given in everyday language are selected text excerpts sent to an external provider. A common misconception is therefore that Rewind AI constantly uploads everything to the internet. That is not quite true, but it does little to change the fact that a stolen laptop reveals a particularly large amount.

Competition from Microsoft and the move into hardware

The idea became widely known especially when Microsoft announced a very similar feature called Recall for Windows computers in 2024. The criticism was so intense that Microsoft postponed the launch and made the feature switchable off. In tech news, Rewind AI has since usually been cited as the model or predecessor of Recall.

The company itself has evolved further and is now called Limitless. Besides the software, it also sells a small clip-on device that records conversations in everyday life. The idea remains the same: forget nothing, find everything again. Anyone reading about automatic meeting transcripts frequently comes across exactly this product category.

For students and private users, the practical benefit is limited, but the learning effect is significant. Rewind AI offers a good illustration of how technically possible convenience collides with the right to privacy.
