Supply Chain

The supply chain is the chain of all the companies that work on a product one after another – from raw material to the finished device on the store shelf. In the tech industry, it decides whether chips, smartphones, and AI computers can even be built.

Almost no product is made in a single factory. A smartphone consists of metals, plastics, glass, and hundreds of small components. These parts come from many different companies and often from many different countries. The supply chain is the chain of these companies, ordered by who supplies what to whom. At the beginning are raw materials from mines or fields, at the end is the finished device with the customer.

Why a broken link brings entire industries to a standstill

A chain is only ever as strong as its weakest link. If a single supplier fails, production comes to a complete stop in the end. That is exactly what happened in 2021 in the automotive industry: there was a shortage of cheap chips, which often cost less than one euro apiece. Yet cars worth tens of thousands of euros could not be delivered.

With computer chips, the problem is especially acute. The world’s most advanced chips are made almost exclusively by a single company in Taiwan. The machines that expose these chips are built by only one company in the Netherlands. Such bottlenecks are called chokepoints. A chokepoint is a spot where there is no substitute.

That is why the supply chain has long since become a political issue. Governments are pouring billions into building their own chip factories domestically. Trade disputes, tariffs, and export bans have a direct effect on these chains. Whoever controls key links holds economic and political power.

From sand to server: the stages of a chip supply chain

At the start is raw material — for chips, for example, very pure sand. From this, silicon disks, so-called wafers, are made. In a chip factory, tiny circuits are applied to these disks. The chips are then cut apart, tested, and packaged into casings. Only then do they move on to the next company, which solders them onto circuit boards.

Each of these stages can take place in a different country. A chip often travels halfway around the world several times before it is finished. This is coordinated through orders, supply contracts, and inventory levels. Many companies work according to the just-in-time principle: parts arrive only shortly before installation. This saves storage costs but makes the chain vulnerable to disruptions.

A common misconception is that a supply chain is truly a simple line. In reality, it is more of a network with many branches. Large corporations have thousands of direct suppliers and often don’t know who their suppliers' suppliers are. It is precisely these hidden layers that cause nasty surprises.

Supply chains in the news, in law, and in AI data centers

In business news, the term usually comes up in connection with disruptions. A blocked canal, an earthquake, or a strike at a port delays deliveries worldwide. Stock prices react to this too, because companies can then sell less. When a corporation talks about supply chain problems, it usually means missing parts or delayed shipments.

In AI, the supply chain is currently especially strained. Training large models requires special graphics chips, so-called GPUs. Their production depends on a handful of factories, on special memory, and on limited packaging capacity. On top of that come data centers, cooling, and power connections. Whoever wants to grow quickly today has to order these parts years in advance.

The term also has a legal dimension. Supply chain laws require large companies to review working conditions at their suppliers. Child labor or environmental damage far down the chain thus becomes the end manufacturer’s problem. In IT, there is additionally the term supply chain attack: attackers smuggle malicious code into a widely used piece of software. Through its updates, they then reach thousands of customers in one fell swoop.
