Project Aura

Project Aura is an announced smart glasses device from manufacturer XREAL, developed jointly with Google. It overlays visual content into the wearer's field of view and is the second officially announced device for Google's glasses operating system Android XR.

Project Aura is the working title of a pair of glasses that overlays additional images into the wearer’s field of view. It looks like a somewhat bulky pair of sunglasses, but displays videos, maps, or text windows that appear to float in the air in front of you. It is being developed by the Chinese company XREAL together with Google. The device was unveiled in May 2025 at a Google developer conference. At that point it was not yet a finished product for buyers, but a pre-release model intended for programmers to try out. The name is therefore provisional and may change before it goes on sale.

Why Google needs glasses from XREAL

Google has already embarrassed itself once with glasses. Google Glass came out in 2013, was expensive, seemed threatening to bystanders, and disappeared from the market again after a few years. Since then, other companies have occupied the field: Meta sells cameras built into Ray-Ban frames, and Apple offers a very expensive headset with the Vision Pro. Google is now attempting a new approach — but this time not alone.

The strategy is reminiscent of what Google did with phones. Google builds the operating system, i.e. the underlying software, and other manufacturers build the devices around it. For smartphones, this system is called Android and now runs on billions of devices. For glasses and headsets, there is a variant called Android XR. Project Aura is only the second announced device in this family, after Samsung's Galaxy XR headset.

For observers on the stock market, this is a signal. When several manufacturers commit to the same system, an ecosystem of apps and accessories emerges. This is exactly what Google Glass failed at: there were hardly any applications for which you actually needed the device. Whether Aura changes that remains an open question — but the attempt is being read as a test run for the entire market.

What’s inside the frame

Aura belongs to the category of optical see-through glasses. This means you look through real glass at your real surroundings, while mini projectors additionally reflect an image into the lenses. This distinguishes them from headsets like the Vision Pro, which completely cover the eyes and show the surroundings only via cameras on the inside. The advantage of the glasses-based approach is low weight; the disadvantage is a smaller and dimmer image.

XREAL states a field of view of around 70 degrees for Aura. This is the width of the area in which content can appear — earlier XREAL models had around 50 degrees. Think of it like the size of a floating screen: the larger the value, the less it feels like looking through a mail slot.

The actual computing work does not happen in the glasses themselves. A cable leads to a small box that you put in your pocket, containing a Qualcomm chip. This keeps the glasses lightweight and prevents them from overheating. Cameras additionally capture the surroundings so that overlaid objects stay fixed at a specific point in space when you turn your head. Google’s AI assistant Gemini is meant to be able to see what’s in front of you and answer questions about it.

From developer model to everyday device

Project Aura cannot yet be purchased. The device is first going to programmers so that apps can be created before it reaches regular customers. It was shown publicly, among other places, at the CES tech trade show in Las Vegas in early 2026. Anyone wanting to try earlier models can already find glasses like the One Pro from XREAL on the market — though without Android XR.

In news reports, Aura almost always appears in comparison with competing products. Typical applications that are demonstrated include: a large virtual screen for working on the go, navigation arrows in your field of view while walking, and real-time translation of signs. A common misconception is that Aura is a competitor to Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses. Those have a camera and speakers, but no display at all — they don’t show anything, they only talk.

It’s worth staying realistic. Devices like this struggle with battery life, price, and the simple question of whether people actually want to wear them in public. Project Aura is therefore less a finished product than a gauge of how seriously Google is once again taking the market for smart glasses.
