Defense tech refers to technology developed for the military, defense, and security agencies – nowadays primarily by young software companies rather than only by traditional arms manufacturers. The term stands for an industry that has been receiving a great deal of investor money since 2022.

Defense tech is the English umbrella term for technology used by armies and security agencies. This includes unmanned aircraft, reconnaissance systems, protection against attacks on computer networks, and programs that analyze huge amounts of data for command centers. What’s new about the term is not the subject matter itself, but the type of companies involved: it’s no longer just large defense contractors with decades-long government contracts building such systems, but also young companies coming from the software world. These companies work with methods otherwise known from Silicon Valley: fast development cycles, lots of software, few factories of their own. That’s why the term appears today mainly in business news about investments, not just in reports about weapons.

Why so much money has been flowing into the industry since 2022

Russia’s attack on Ukraine has changed perceptions of the industry. Previously, defense was considered an unattractive or morally sensitive field by many investors. Some investment funds had even explicitly excluded arms from their investment guidelines. Since then, European states have significantly increased their defense budgets, and with that a market with very solvent customers is growing.

Added to this is an observation from the war itself: cheap drones costing a few thousand euros can destroy tanks worth millions. This calls into question the old calculation according to which more expensive systems are automatically superior. Whoever can quickly deliver many simple, software-controlled devices suddenly has an advantage over corporations that spend ten years developing a fighter jet.

For investors, this is a growth market; for politicians, a question of independence. Europe wants to be less dependent on American technology. At the same time, the debate about how far machines should be allowed to participate in decisions about life and death remains open. This question accompanies practically every piece of news from the industry.

From the flood of sensor data to the decision

The core of many modern systems is not the weapon, but the analysis of data. Satellites, radar devices, cameras, and radio receivers continuously deliver information. No team of humans can review this volume in a useful amount of time. Software with pattern recognition therefore pre-filters: it flags, for example, vehicles in satellite images or unusual radio signals.

This pre-selection ends up in a kind of digital situational map. There, all reports come together and are combined into a shared picture. Such platforms are the main product of companies like Palantir or Helsing. The basic idea resembles a navigation app that combines traffic data from many users into a single traffic jam display – only with far higher demands on fail-safety and secrecy.

As for the devices themselves, the trend is toward autonomy. A drone is supposed to hold its course even when the radio connection is disrupted. It’s important to draw a distinction here: autonomous initially just means that a device drives or flies without constant remote control. Whether it is also allowed to decide on an attack by itself is a separate question. In most states, the rule so far is that a human must give this authorization.

Where the term appears in the news

Defense tech is most commonly encountered in the business section. There, it concerns funding rounds of young companies, IPOs, or share prices of corporations like Rheinmetall. Defense ETFs, i.e. funds tracking a basket of defense stocks, are also now being openly advertised. Names like Anduril from the US or Helsing from Munich stand as representatives of the new generation of providers.

A second point of contact is the question of what is civilian and what is military. Many components are both: image processing, battery technology, chips, satellite communications. Experts speak of dual use, meaning dual applicability. This is why even companies that don’t see themselves as defense companies at all get drawn into the debate.

Finally, the term runs into rules and resistance. Universities argue over civil clauses that prohibit research for military purposes. Employees of large tech corporations have repeatedly protested against military contracts. Anyone reading news from this field should therefore always keep in mind who is paying, who is deciding, and what a system actually does on its own.
