
Hands-free Highway Driving
Hands-free highway driving means that a car steers, accelerates, and brakes on its own on the highway, while the human is allowed to take their hands off the steering wheel. However, they must still keep watching traffic and be able to intervene at any time — an interior camera monitors this.
Modern cars can take on a lot of tasks on their own on the highway. They keep the lane, adjust the speed to the vehicle ahead, and brake when needed. With most of these systems, the driver still has to keep their hands on the steering wheel. With hands-free highway driving, that’s exactly what’s no longer necessary: the hands are allowed to rest in the lap. The eyes, however, are not — the human remains responsible and must continuously watch the traffic. So you’re giving up the muscle work, not the attention.
Why hands on the wheel are a point of contention
Hands on the steering wheel are not an end in themselves for manufacturers. They’re a cheap trick to check whether the driver is still there. A slight pressure on the wheel every few seconds is enough for the system as a sign of life. The problem: this test is easy to trick and says little about whether someone is actually looking at the road.
Hands-free systems replace this test with better monitoring. A small camera on the steering column watches the driver’s head position and gaze direction. If they look at their phone for too long, the car warns them. If they don’t react, it brakes to a standstill. Safety authorities consider this gaze monitoring more effective than gripping the steering wheel.
Economically, the topic matters because such systems are sold at a high price. Manufacturers often charge a monthly subscription for this instead of a one-time surcharge. This turns a car into a product that keeps generating money after purchase. That’s why the term regularly appears in quarterly figures and analyst reports.
Cameras, radar, and highly accurate maps
First, the car needs a picture of its surroundings. Cameras recognize lane markings, signs, and other vehicles. Radar sensors additionally measure distance and speed, even in rain or darkness. Some manufacturers add a laser scanner that scans the surroundings in three dimensions.
On top of that comes a very precise digital map of the highway. It is significantly more detailed than an ordinary navigation map and knows every lane and every curve down to the centimeter. The system continuously compares the camera image with this map. That’s exactly why hands-free driving usually only works on an approved list of routes. If the car leaves this area, it demands the hands back on the wheel.
A common misconception: hands-free does not mean autonomous driving. Experts divide automation into levels from 0 to 5. Hands-free systems are at level 2, meaning the human remains the driver. Only from level 3 onward is one allowed to look away, and then the manufacturer is liable for that. The difference sounds small, but legally it’s enormous.
From Cadillac Super Cruise to the German traffic jam assistant
The best-known example is Super Cruise from General Motors, which has been running on approved highways in North America since 2017. Ford offers a comparable system with BlueCruise, and Tesla and BMW have their own variants. In Europe, the rules are stricter, which is why such features arrive later and in a more limited form here.
In Germany, you’re most likely to encounter the principle in traffic jams. Mercedes is allowed to drive with Drive Pilot on certain highways up to 95 km/h, and there even glancing to the side is permitted. This is already level 3 and thus a step beyond classic hands-free driving.
In the news, the term usually comes up in two contexts. Either a manufacturer announces an expansion to new routes or models. Or an authority investigates an accident in which the system was active. Both show how closely technology, law, and trust are intertwined here.
