Hot Word Activation

Hot word activation means that a device constantly listens for a specific signal word and only starts truly listening afterward. Only this word switches on the actual speech processing – before that, the device merely checks whether the word has been spoken.

Speakers and phones with voice control only react once you say a fixed signal word. Well-known examples are “Hey Siri”, “Alexa” or “OK Google”. This start word is called a hot word or wake word. For the device to be able to hear it, the microphone must be permanently switched on. However, it only checks one single question: did the signal word just occur or not? Everything else is discarded and does not travel to the internet. Only after the wake word does the actual processing of what was said begin.

Why the device doesn’t simply send everything along

Without this principle, a speaker would have to send every sound to the manufacturer’s servers. That would be technically possible, but bad for two reasons. First, it would cost enormous amounts of data and computing time. A household produces 24 hours of sound per day, of which perhaps five minutes are actually directed at the device.

Second, it would be a massive privacy problem. A microphone that permanently transmits everything is a bug. Hot word activation is therefore also a legal argument used by manufacturers: only the short segment after the wake word leaves the device. The rest is checked locally and immediately overwritten.

This doesn’t always work perfectly. There are so-called false triggers, when a similar-sounding word is spoken on television. Studies have shown that voice assistants start up unintentionally several times a day and then actually send recordings. This has repeatedly made headlines, because employees have listened to such recordings for quality control purposes.

The little guard in the chip

Inside the device, a very small recognition program is at work. It doesn’t know the whole language, only the sound of the one wake word. You can think of it like a bouncer who has memorized a single password. Nothing else interests him, which is why he needs hardly any energy.

Technically, this program often runs on its own dedicated low-power chip. The phone’s main processor can sleep in the meantime. Only when the little guard responds does it wake up the big processor. Then the recorded question is sent to powerful computers on the internet or, on newer devices, processed directly on the phone.

Developers set a sensitivity level for this. If it’s too high, the device triggers constantly for no reason. If it’s too low, you have to repeat the wake word three times. This trade-off between false alarms and missed detections is the central challenge. That’s why wake words are usually multi-syllabic and sound unusual – “Alexa” is confused less often than a short “Hey”.

From the kitchen speaker to the car

The principle is best known from smart speakers and phones. But it’s also found in cars, TVs, headphones and some kitchen appliances. In new cars, voice control is increasingly replacing buttons, because drivers are supposed to keep their hands on the wheel.

In news reports, the term usually comes up in two contexts. Either it’s about privacy and unwanted recordings, or about competition among providers. Whoever owns the wake word owns access to the user. That’s why Amazon, Google and Apple compete over which assistant listens by default on which device.

A common misconception is the assumption that a device with a wake word permanently records conversations. The microphone is indeed on, but it normally doesn’t store anything permanently. Hot word activation should also not be confused with actual speech recognition. The wake word only opens the door – understanding the sentence is a completely different, far more complex step.
