An autoimmune process is a process in which the body's own defense system attacks healthy tissue because it mistakenly identifies it as an intruder. This error gives rise to diseases such as type 1 diabetes or multiple sclerosis — a field in which AI-driven drug research now plays a major role.
The body has a defense system that recognizes and destroys pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. For this to work, the system must be able to distinguish between two things: what belongs to the body and what does not. In an autoimmune process, this very distinction fails. The defense system then attacks healthy cells of its own body as if they were foreign. The word is composed of the Greek “autos,” meaning “self,” and the Latin term for defense. Unlike an infection, the damage therefore does not come from outside but arises from within.
When the defense system becomes the cause of disease
Autoimmune processes underlie an entire group of diseases. In type 1 diabetes, the defense system destroys the cells in the pancreas that produce the hormone insulin. In multiple sclerosis, it attacks the protective layer of the nerve fibers. In rheumatoid arthritis, it targets the joints. Estimates suggest that in industrialized countries, roughly one in twenty people is affected by such a disease.
What makes this special: you cannot simply remove the attacker. An antibiotic kills bacteria, but there is no such remedy against one’s own immune system. Treatments therefore usually only dampen the defense response. This helps with the symptoms, but at the same time makes patients more susceptible to real infections. This balancing act is the reason why research in this area is so demanding.
For the economy, this field is highly attractive. Medications for autoimmune diseases are among the highest-revenue products in the entire pharmaceutical industry. Accordingly, they frequently appear in quarterly reports and acquisition announcements.
How the immune system confuses self with foreign
Cells carry a kind of identification badge made of protein molecules on their surface. Defense cells read this badge and decide: self or foreign. During the body’s development, defense cells that react to the body’s own badges are sorted out. However, this sorting process is not perfect. Individual misdirected cells survive and can become active later.
A common trigger is a similarity between a pathogen and body tissue. If a bacterium carries a molecule that closely resembles a human one, the defense system may attack both after the infection. Experts call this molecular mimicry. You can imagine it like a facial recognition system that confuses two similar-looking people and then treats both as suspects.
Whether the disease actually develops usually depends on several factors together. Genetic predisposition increases the risk but rarely triggers the disease on its own. Added to this are infections, smoking, stress, or hormonal changes. This is why an autoimmune disease often breaks out suddenly, even though the predisposition has existed for a long time. A common misconception is that a weak immune system is to blame. It is more a misdirected system than a weak one.
Autoimmune research in headlines and stock prices
In tech and financial reporting, the term is mainly encountered in connection with drug development. Companies such as AbbVie, Roche, or Novartis generate billions in revenue with drugs that suppress autoimmune processes. When a patent expires, revenue often drops noticeably. Such announcements can significantly move stock prices.
Artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly important role in this. Programs predict how protein molecules fold and bind to one another in the body. This makes it possible to assess more quickly which active substance docks at the right site. Companies like Isomorphic Labs or Recursion advertise exactly this approach. Autoimmune diseases are considered a worthwhile target because the biological relationships are complex and, so far, only partially understood.
The topic also comes up more often in everyday life than many people think. Psoriasis, celiac disease, and the thyroid condition Hashimoto’s are among them. Anyone who reads about “biologics” in the news is usually dealing with medications against such processes. To be distinguished from the term autoimmune process is allergy: there, the excessive defense response is directed against harmless substances from outside, such as pollen, not against the body itself.
