This is accomplished by software that has learned from huge amounts of voice recordings to match sounds to words. It is precisely these learning programs that are meant when artificial intelligence is mentioned. The best-known example is live translation: someone speaks Spanish, and German comes through in the ear.

Why earbuds are suddenly considered computers

A smartphone has to be pulled out of a pocket, unlocked, and looked at. Earbuds already sit in the ear anyway, often for hours. That makes them the device that stays on the body the longest. Anyone wanting to build an assistant that is constantly available almost inevitably ends up at the ear.

For Apple, this is also economically significant. The AirPods division generates double-digit billions in revenue every year and would be a major company on its own. Analysts see AI features as a reason why customers replace their old models. This matters because the market for simple earbuds is largely saturated.

On top of that, there is competition. Google has been selling earbuds with a translation feature under the Pixel Buds line for years, while Meta is betting on glasses with a camera and voice assistant. Whoever controls the device through which people talk to their assistant controls an important gateway to the user. That is why this area is considered strategic, not merely an accessories business.

What happens in the ear and what happens in the data center

Each earbud contains a small chip, plus microphones and sensors. The chip handles tasks that have to happen instantly. This includes noise cancellation: microphones pick up ambient noise, and the chip generates a counter sound wave. This has to happen within fractions of a millisecond, as a detour via the internet would be far too slow.

More demanding tasks work differently. For translation, the earbud first sends the audio to the paired iPhone. There, a model converts the speech into text, translates it, and then generates speech from it again. The phone handles some steps itself, while more complex ones are sent to Apple’s servers. Each of these stages costs time, which is why the translation usually arrives with a delay of one to two seconds.

A common misconception is that the earbuds themselves do the thinking. In fact, they are mainly a microphone, speaker, and wireless connection. The actual computing work takes place elsewhere. This also explains why many AI features are only available with newer iPhones and only in certain countries and languages.

Translating, measuring heartbeat, nodding your head

The most visible feature is live translation while traveling. Two people without a common language can have a simple conversation if both have suitable devices or the phone listens in. This works well for small talk and directions. With technical jargon, dialect, or noisy surroundings, the technology still reaches its limits.

There are also features that sound less like AI but use the same technology. Earbuds detect a nod or shake of the head as a response to a prompt. Newer models use sensors in the ear to measure heart rate during exercise. In the US, AirPods Pro have also been officially approved as a hearing aid, with an in-ear hearing test adjusting the sound accordingly.
