A CG artist designs images, characters and environments entirely on the computer, for example for films, series, advertising and video games. The profession combines creative work with technical software and is currently changing significantly due to AI tools.
A CG artist creates images not with a camera or brush, but on a computer. The abbreviation CG stands for Computer Graphics, meaning graphics generated on a computer. Such professionals build, for example, the dragon in a series, the spaceship in a feature film, or the character in a video game. To do this, they shape three-dimensional objects on screen, give them surfaces and colors, and set up lighting. In the end, the computer calculates a finished image from all this information. The profession sits between art and technology: you need an eye for visual impact as well as patience with complicated software.
Why hardly any film can do without CG anymore
Almost every major feature film today contains images that never existed in reality. This applies not only to obvious effects like explosions or fantastical creatures. Often, backgrounds are also swapped out, crowds are enlarged, or cables and cranes are removed from the image. This work is done by CG artists, usually in large teams over months.
Economically, this is a substantial cost factor. For some blockbusters, the effects consume a three-digit million-dollar amount. Entire studios in Canada, New Zealand, or India depend on this demand. If a major client falls away, the industry quickly comes under pressure.
This is precisely why the profession is currently in the news. AI systems can now generate images and short videos directly from a text description. Some tasks that used to take days now take minutes. Whether this will eliminate jobs or merely shift the work is an open question that is being fiercely debated in the industry.
From wireframe to finished image
The work proceeds in several steps. First, the model is created: a shape made of many small surfaces that together form a surface. Then comes texturing, meaning the application of color, pattern, and material properties. Only this makes metal look shiny and skin look soft.
If the character is to move, it needs an internal framework of virtual bones. Animators move this framework frame by frame, similar to working with a jointed puppet. Afterwards, virtual lamps and a virtual camera are set up. Finally, the computer calculates the final image, which is called rendering. A single film frame can cost hours of computing time, and one second of film consists of 24 such frames.
AI now intervenes at many of these points. It generates draft images for initial ideas, fills in missing image areas, or transfers movements from a phone video onto a character. A common misconception is that AI replaces the entire process. Usually it takes over individual work steps, while selection, correction, and overall visual effect remain with the human.
Where the work of CG artists becomes visible
It is most clearly seen in video games and animated films, where every image is created on the computer. But commercials, music videos, and explainer videos also use the technology. Even furniture catalogs often show not photos but computed images of rooms that never actually existed.
Beyond the entertainment sector, CG artists work in architecture, where planned buildings are visualized in advance. Car manufacturers and medical technology companies also employ them. Those searching job listings will find titles like 3D Artist, VFX Artist, or Technical Artist, each referring to specific subfields.
In business news, the term usually appears in connection with disputes. Unions in Hollywood have fought for and won rules on the use of AI. At the same time, software companies advertise that they can make productions significantly cheaper. For those starting out in the profession, this mainly means: craftsmanship and visual composition remain important, while dealing with AI tools comes as an additional requirement.
