UX stands for User Experience and describes how using a product feels for a person: easy or effortful, clear or confusing. It refers to the entire experience, not just the appearance of an app or website.

UX is the English abbreviation for User Experience. The term describes how using a device, an app, or a website feels for a person. Does he immediately find what he’s looking for? Does he understand what’s happening right now? Does he get frustrated, or does everything come easily to him? So it’s not just about the appearance, but the entire process from first opening to reaching the goal. This also includes waiting times, understandable texts, and how errors are handled.

Why good products fail due to poor usability

Technology alone rarely decides whether a product succeeds. Two providers can offer nearly the same performance, and yet one wins the market. Often the difference lies in how effortless the usability is. People abandon something as soon as it becomes unclear, and they rarely come back.

For companies, this is directly measurable in money. An online shop whose checkout process has five steps instead of two loses a noticeable share of its purchases. Such drop-off rates are analyzed precisely. That’s why large companies employ entire teams that work solely on usability.

A common misconception is that UX is the same as attractive design. Appearance is only one part of it and is more precisely called UI, meaning User Interface. An app can look elegant and still be unusable. Conversely, a plain form sometimes has an excellent user experience.

Observing, testing, simplifying

It usually starts with observation. Experts put real users in front of an unfinished version and give them a task. Then they watch without helping. Every point where someone hesitates or clicks incorrectly is a sign of a problem.

Before a product is built, simple sketches of the screens are often created, so-called prototypes. They only work for show, but they can already be clicked through. This way, you notice early on whether a process is logical. Changes to a sketch cost minutes; changes to finished software cost weeks.

Later, companies continue to measure with real data. In an A/B test, one half of visitors gets version A, the other version B. Afterward, one compares which variant leads to the goal more often. The basic rule behind this is simple: the user should have to think as little as possible to reach their goal.

From ticket machines to chatbots

In everyday life, you encounter UX constantly, mostly without noticing. A ticket machine with a line of people waiting has a UX problem. So does a government website where you can’t find the right form. Good usability barely stands out; bad usability does immediately.

In the news, the term often comes up in product reviews. When a new phone or a car is reported on, it’s almost always also about usability. Car manufacturers have recently been heavily criticized for replacing buttons with touchscreens. It looks clean, but it’s impractical while driving.

For AI products, UX has become especially important. Language models existed for some time before they became known to a broad audience. The breakthrough came only with a simple chat window into which anyone could type a question. The technology wasn’t suddenly new, but access to it was. This is considered one of the strongest examples of how much usability determines success.
