
VHS
VHS was the format that spread worldwide from the late 1970s onward for storing films and TV shows on magnetic tape inside a plastic cassette. It made recording and playing back moving images accessible to the masses for the first time and is now regarded as a textbook example of how a standard can prevail over technically superior competition.
VHS is a format used to record films and TV shows onto magnetic tape and play them back again. The tape sits inside a black plastic cassette, roughly the size of a thick paperback. You slide it into a device, the video recorder, which is connected to the television. The abbreviation stands for Video Home System. The Japanese company JVC launched it in 1976, and until the early 2000s such a device sat in almost every living room. Only the DVD and later streaming services pushed VHS aside.
How one format won the video market
Before VHS, television was fleeting. If you missed a broadcast, that was just bad luck. With the video recorder, you could record shows and watch them later. That sounds trivial today, but at the time it was a break with the entire television model. For the first time, the audience decided when something aired, not the broadcaster.
VHS also stands for one of the most famous format wars in the history of technology. Sony had a competing system called Betamax, which many experts considered to deliver the better picture. Nevertheless, Betamax lost. VHS cassettes could record for longer, the devices were cheaper, and JVC licensed the technology generously to other manufacturers. This led to more devices, more films available for rental, and in turn even more devices.
This exact pattern is still cited in business articles to this day. It’s called the network effect: a product becomes more valuable to each individual user the more other people use it. Whenever there’s a debate about AI models, app stores, or charging plugs for electric cars, the comparison to VHS and Betamax comes up almost inevitably. The lesson is: the standard with the larger ecosystem wins, not necessarily the technically best one.
Magnetic tape, helical scan, and tape tangles
The tape is coated with a wafer-thin layer of magnetizable particles. A recording head in the recorder alters their orientation, thereby storing the image and sound signal. During playback, a playback head reads these magnetic patterns back out. The signal is analog, meaning it is stored as a continuously variable fluctuation rather than as a sequence of zeros and ones like a digital file.
A video image contains far more information than sound. To fit this onto a narrow tape, VHS uses a trick: the heads sit on a tilted drum that spins rapidly while the tape moves slowly past it. This writes the data in diagonal tracks running across the tape. This effective tape length is thus a multiple of the actual physical length.
The downside of this method is wear. Every playback rubs against the tape, every copy loses quality, and magnetic layers degrade over decades. A cassette that has been recorded over many times becomes pale and noisy. If the tape gets caught in the device, the notorious tape tangle results. Digital copies don’t have this problem: a file remains identical no matter how many times it’s duplicated.
VHS today: archives, nostalgia, and the eternal comparison
New VHS devices have not been manufactured since 2016. Nevertheless, the format hasn’t disappeared entirely. Archives, television stations, and families own millions of tapes containing material that exists nowhere else. These are being digitized, meaning played back and converted into a video file in the process. Because the tapes are aging, this is considered a race against time.
Visually, VHS lives on. The typical look, with image noise, washed-out colors, and jittery picture edges, is deliberately recreated in music videos and films. Even AI-based image generators respond to prompts like “in VHS style,” because they’ve learned such footage from their training data.
In business news, you’ll usually encounter VHS as a metaphor. If someone says a provider wants to become “the VHS of AI,” they mean: it wants to set the standard that everyone else has to adopt. A common mistake is confusing VHS with a video camera or with adult education centers, which share the same abbreviation in German. Here, it refers exclusively to the storage format.
