3D White Model

A 3D white model is a rough spatial draft of an object or building that shows only shape and size while remaining uniformly white. Colors, materials, and details are added later, once the basic form is settled.

Anyone designing a building, a car, or a game world on a computer assembles the whole thing out of spatial forms. A 3D white model is the first, very rough version of such a design. It shows only where something stands, how big it is, and what shape it has. Everything remains uniformly white or light gray, without color, without surfaces like wood or concrete, without small details. You can imagine it like an architectural model made of white cardboard: the arrangement is already correct, but the facades are still blank. The name comes precisely from this lack of color.

Why designs stay colorless at first

A finished 3D image looks impressive, but it costs a lot of work. Applying materials, setting up lighting, modeling details – these often take weeks. If it then turns out that a building wing is positioned wrong, a large part of that work is wasted. The white model prevents this. It forces everyone involved to talk about proportions and arrangement first.

On top of that, there’s a psychological effect. Colors and realistic surfaces distract the eye. If you show a client a colorful, photorealistic image, they’ll discuss the color tone of the facade. If you show them a white model, they’ll discuss the height of the building. That’s exactly what’s wanted at an early stage.

The lean version is also practical from a technical standpoint. A white model consists of comparatively little data and can be rotated smoothly on screen. Changes are made quickly because hardly anything depends on it. Only once the shape is fixed is the expensive fine polish worthwhile.

From block to shape

At the start there’s usually a base area, such as a floor plan or a map. From this, surfaces are pulled upward to create simple solid shapes. This pulling-up process is called extrusion. Further solids are added, intersected, or subtracted again until the rough shape is right.

The surfaces are then assigned a single, neutral material: matte white. Because everything looks the same, the effect arises purely through light and shadow. That’s why simple lighting is often set up even at this stage. It reveals whether a projection looks too massive or a courtyard lies too dark.

It’s important to distinguish this from a mere sketch. A white model is dimensionally accurate; its measurements correspond to the planned reality. A common misconception is to consider it non-binding. In fact, it’s the foundation on which materials, windows, and furniture will later be placed. Related terms are block model and greybox, an expression originating from game development for the same idea.

From building permits to AI image generation

White models are most commonly encountered in architecture. City administrations display planned new buildings as white volumes within a model of the existing city. This way, you can see at a glance whether a high-rise overwhelms its surroundings. Shading studies are also carried out using such models, since only the geometry matters for that.

In game development, the same technique is used for testing. A level is first built out of gray blocks and played through. If walking paths and jump distances don’t work, they’re changed while it’s still cheap to do so. Only afterward do graphic artists take over and turn the blocks into ruins or spaceships.

Recently, the term has also appeared in connection with AI. Image generators can be guided using a white 3D draft as a template. The software then retains the given shape and only invents materials, lighting, and surroundings. This combines the control of classic modeling with the speed of automatically generated images. In trade announcements from architecture and graphics software providers, there is therefore often talk of white-model workflows.
