TabletCraft is an open-source AI system for bidirectional translation between Akkadian (cuneiform) and English, developed by Zhaohui Wang at the University of Southern California (Viterbi School of Engineering). It is built on a fine-tuned ByT5-base translation model trained on 116,000 bidirectional sentence pairs, combined with a cuneiform sign converter (14,240 mappings) and a visual tablet renderer. The project was presented at the 4th Workshop on Cross-Cultural Considerations in NLP (C3NLP) co-located with ACL 2026 and is freely available as a pip-installable toolkit (cuneiscribe) with CLI, Python API, and Gradio web demo.
