Caper Carts are AI-powered shopping carts by Instacart (originally developed by Caper AI, founded in 2016/2019, and acquired by Instacart in 2021). Each cart is equipped with cameras, a calibrated scale, location sensors, and an NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX Edge AI module that uses sensor fusion to automatically recognize items, display expenses in real-time, and enable self-checkout directly at the cart. The carts are part of Instacart's "Connected Stores" platform and will be deployed in 2026 across thousands of locations in over 100 cities in North America as well as with international retail partners (including ALDI Austria, Coles, and Morrisons UK). Additional features include loyalty program integration, personalized discounts, EBT-SNAP tracking, and location-based advertising.
