Bhashini is a platform of the Indian government (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, National Language Translation Mission) that provides AI-powered language technologies such as machine translation, automatic speech recognition (ASR), and text-to-speech synthesis (TTS) for Indian languages. Launched in July 2022 as an open, Open Source digital public good, it supports 22 Indian official languages as well as additional regional and tribal languages. Through the ULCA platform (Universal Language Contribution APIs), AI/ML models from various research institutes (including IITB, IITM, IIITH, CDAC) are made accessible to developers and government agencies for applications such as real-time translation at government events like Modi's Independence Day speech.
