Inkling is the first publicly released AI model from Thinking Machines Lab (the startup founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati), launched on July 15, 2026. It is an Open-Weight Mixture-of-Experts Reasoning model with 975 billion total parameters (41 billion active) that operates natively multimodal (text, image, audio) and is accessible via the Tinker platform as well as APIs from third-party providers. The model achieves a score of 41 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, positioning itself as a competent, though not leading Open-Weight model compared to closed Frontier systems.
