Blindsight is an experimental brain implant by Neuralink designed to restore vision in completely blind individuals with an intact visual cortex. It completely bypasses the eyes and optic nerve by feeding camera signals directly into the visual cortex via an electrode array, where they generate phosphenes (points of light). The device received Breakthrough Device status from the US-FDA in September 2024; human clinical trials have not yet officially begun, with first implants expected in 2026. It is based on the same N1 implant platform as Neuralink's first product "Telepathy," but with reversed signal direction (writing instead of reading).
