Zero-Click Search

Zero-click search refers to a search query where users get the answer directly on the results page and no longer click through to an external website. Since search engines started displaying AI-generated summaries, this affects a growing share of all searches — with noticeable consequences for the visitor numbers of publishers and how-to sites.

Anyone who once searched Google for the height of the Eiffel Tower would get a list of links and click on one of them. Today, the number 330 meters often appears right on the results page, in a highlighted box. The search is thus finished without anyone visiting another website. That’s exactly what the term zero-click search means: a search query that results in zero clicks on an external offering. The search engine delivers the answer itself, instead of merely showing the way to it. The term comes from English and, translated literally, means 'Null-Klick-Suche' in German.

When traffic doesn’t materialize

For users, this is convenient. For website operators, it’s an economic problem. News sites, recipe portals, and how-to blogs finance themselves through advertising or subscriptions. Both require people to actually visit the site. If visitors stay away, the revenue source dries up — even though the content is still being read, just within the search engine’s summary.

Various analytics firms estimate that well over half of all Google searches now end without a click on an external result. The exact figures are disputed because counting methods differ. The trend itself, however, is undisputed and has accelerated with AI answers. Several major publishers reported noticeable declines in their search visitors in 2024 and 2025 as a result.

This gives rise to a fundamental conflict. Search engines need third-party content to build good answers. The creators of that content get less and less back in return. Some media companies have therefore sued, while others have signed licensing agreements with AI providers and are being paid for its use.

What happens on the results page

Zero-click searches arise from elements that search engines display in addition to the list of links. These include info boxes with facts, weather displays, converters, map excerpts, and expandable fields with frequently asked questions. Such building blocks pull information directly from databases or from the text of the linked pages. The user sees the result without opening the source.

The newer and more impactful variant is AI-generated summaries. A language model — that is, a program that generates new text from existing texts — reads several sources in the process and formulates its own paragraph from them. At Google, this feature is called AI Overviews. The paragraph appears right at the top, ahead of all links. Source citations are usually included only as small references on the side.

An important distinction: zero-click search describes user behavior, not the technology behind it. A search can lead to zero clicks even without AI, for example with a weather query. Conversely, not every clickless search counts as a failure. Some users are deliberately looking only for a number or a time and are satisfied once they have it.

From search result to chatbot

In everyday life, this phenomenon shows up with almost every simple question. Conversions, opening hours, football scores, the meaning of a foreign word — the search engine answers all of this directly. Voice assistants on phones or smart speakers are also pure zero-click systems. They read out an answer; there’s no list of links there at all.

In business news, the term mainly comes up in two contexts. First, in the quarterly results of media companies that have to explain declining reach. Second, in antitrust debates, since regulators are examining whether search engines are unfairly boosting their own position.

The industry is responding with new strategies. Some providers are relying more heavily on newsletters, apps, or communities to remain directly reachable. Others are trying to get themselves cited as a source within the AI answers themselves — for which the term Generative Engine Optimization has already become established, meaning optimization for AI answer engines rather than for classic results lists.
