XPU

XPU is an umbrella term for computing chips of all kinds – from the classic main processor through graphics chips to specialized chips for artificial intelligence. The X stands as a placeholder for the respective type and is meant to express that modern computers combine different chips depending on the task.

Every computer contains components that compute. The best known is the main processor, called the Central Processing Unit or CPU for short. Alongside it there is the graphics chip, the Graphics Processing Unit or GPU, and by now many other specialized chips. Because all these names end in the three letters PU, an umbrella term has become established: XPU. The X here is a placeholder, just like the x in a math problem. So whoever talks about XPU doesn’t mean one particular chip, but the whole family.

Why one chip became many

For decades there was essentially only one important kind of computing chip: the main processor. It could do everything, but nothing particularly fast. Its advantage was flexibility, since it executes any program step by step. As long as chips got noticeably faster every year, that was entirely sufficient.

This annual growth has flattened considerably. At the same time, computing demand has grown, especially due to artificial intelligence. The way out is called specialization: chips are built that can do only one kind of task, but do it extremely fast. At its core, an AI model consists of enormous multiplications of number tables. A chip tailored for this handles it, depending on the comparison, ten to a hundred times more efficiently than a main processor.

For companies, this is a matter of cost. Data centers pay for electricity and for chips, both in the billions. Whoever chooses the right XPU for their task saves on both. That’s why the term shows up conspicuously often in quarterly reports and investor presentations.

The most important letters before the PU

The CPU is the all-rounder. It has few, but very powerful computing units and is good at working through complicated processes with many branches. The GPU was originally developed for computer games. It has thousands of simple computing units that all do the same thing at the same time. That’s exactly what’s needed for AI too, which is why graphics chips are now the most important AI chips.

Among these, specialists are mixed in. An NPU, Neural Processing Unit, sits in many smartphones and laptops and handles small AI tasks directly on the device. A TPU, Tensor Processing Unit, is Google's own chip for large AI data centers. There are also DPUs for networking tasks and other variants. The letters are partly marketing, partly genuine technical differences.

What matters is: these chips don’t replace one another, they complement each other. The main processor distributes the work and keeps the overview. It sends the computation-heavy parts to the appropriate specialized unit and collects the results again. A technical term for this is heterogeneous computing. You can picture it like a workshop, where a master craftsman distributes orders to specialized tradespeople.

XPU in products and headlines

In everyday life, you encounter this principle in every newer phone. When the camera automatically brightens a photo or the keyboard suggests words, an NPU is often computing in the background. The manufacturer then advertises figures like TOPS, meaning trillions of computing operations per second. Marketing terms like AI-PC also refer to exactly these additional chips.

In business news, XPU usually stands for a power struggle. Nvidia currently dominates the market for AI graphics chips. Major customers like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft are therefore developing their own chips to become more independent. Intel even used the term XPU directly as a strategic word for its chip portfolio.

A common misconception is that XPU is a concrete product you can buy. That’s not true. It’s an umbrella term, similar to the word vehicle. When a company advertises with it, it’s worth looking at which chip is specifically meant and what it’s actually good for.
