Intel Inside

Intel Inside is an advertising campaign by US chipmaker Intel from 1991, in which computer manufacturers stuck an Intel logo on their devices and received money back in return. It turned an invisible component inside the computer into a brand that buyers deliberately asked for.

Intel Inside is an advertising campaign by the company Intel that started in 1991. Intel manufactures processors, which are the central computing components of a computer. Nobody sees this component, because it is permanently built into the case. Intel therefore convinced computer manufacturers to attach a sticker with the Intel logo on the outside. In return, Intel reimbursed part of their advertising costs. In this way, a nameless internal part became a selling point that customers explicitly asked for in stores.

Why a component became a brand

Before 1991, most people bought a computer based on the name on the case. So based on IBM, Compaq, or later Dell. Hardly anyone was interested in who had assembled the machine inside. Intel was in danger of becoming an interchangeable supplier. Competitors like AMD built very similar chips and sold them more cheaply.

The campaign reversed this relationship. Suddenly, buyers no longer asked only about the brand of the device, but about the chip inside it. A manufacturer that did without Intel had to explain why its device did not carry the well-known sticker. This gave Intel bargaining power over its own customers.

Economically, Intel Inside is considered one of the most successful marketing projects in the history of technology. Over the years, Intel spent several billion dollars on it. In return, its market share in PC processors stood at around 80 percent for years, sometimes higher. To this day, the term is used in business writing to describe a successful supplier brand.

The deal between the chipmaker and device manufacturers

The principle behind this is called ingredient branding, meaning marketing for an ingredient. It is known from Gore-Tex in jackets or from Bosch technology in kitchen appliances. The supplier advertises its part directly to the end customer, even though it never sells it separately. The goal is for the customer to demand the ingredient, forcing the device manufacturer to install it.

Technically, this worked through a fund. Every PC manufacturer paid a certain price for Intel chips. Intel set aside part of that amount into an account. The manufacturer was allowed to draw on this credit if it displayed the Intel logo in its advertising. Up to half of the advertising costs came back this way.

In addition, there was the well-known five-note audio signal that has run in TV commercials since 1994. Such recognition signals work more effectively than long explanations. Incidentally, a common misconception is to read the sticker as a seal of quality. It only states which company built the processor, saying nothing about its performance compared to the competition.

What is still visible today

The stickers are still found on new laptops today, albeit under different names. For years they were called Intel Core i5 or Intel Core i7, and since 2023 also Intel Core Ultra. On pre-built PCs at electronics stores, the chip name is often already stated in the product title. This is the direct descendant of the 1991 campaign.

In business news, Intel Inside mostly appears as a comparison. When a supplier becomes better known than the end product, people speak of the Intel Inside effect. Currently, this applies to chip designer Nvidia, whose graphics processors power almost all major AI systems. The Taiwanese contract manufacturer TSMC is also described this way, even though hardly any device carries its name.

At the same time, Intel Inside shows the limits of such a strategy. In smartphones, Intel plays practically no role, as chips of a different design dominate there. And in AI data centers, the company has lost touch with Nvidia. So a strong brand does not protect against missing out on a technological development.
