Pi is a minimalist, Open Source agent framework (coding-agent harness) by earendil-works, originally developed by Mario Zechner and acquired by Earendil Inc. in March 2026. It provides only four core tools (read, write, edit, bash) and delegates all additional capabilities (sub-agents, plan mode, MCP, permission system) to a TypeScript extension, skill, and package system. Pi runs locally in the terminal, is provider-agnostic (20+ LLM providers via its own pi-ai-API), and supports four operating modes: interactive, print/JSON, RPC, and SDK embedding. The core remains permanently MIT-licensed, while Earendil plans to build additional commercial and fair-source components in the future.
