Cline (formerly "Claude Dev") is an open-source autonomous AI coding agent by Cline Bot Inc., running as an extension in VS Code, JetBrains, Cursor, and Windsurf, as well as a standalone CLI tool. The agent can read and edit files, execute terminal commands, control a browser, and connect MCP servers — requiring explicit user approval (human-in-the-loop) at every step. The product is model-agnostic (Bring Your Own Key) and supports 30+ LLM providers; optionally, a managed Cline Provider and a ClinePass subscription for open-weight models are available.
