OpenClaw is an open-source, locally run personal AI assistant controlled via messaging channels such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, or Signal, which autonomously performs tasks like web browsing, file and code creation, scheduling, or smart-home control. The project was developed by Peter Steinberger, originally launched as "Clawdbot"/"Moltbot," and renamed "OpenClaw" in late January 2026. The software is free under the MIT license, runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux, and since late June 2026 also as a native iOS and Android app; ongoing costs mainly arise from connected LLM APIs. Since February 2026 the project has been stewarded by the nonprofit OpenClaw Foundation after Steinberger moved to OpenAI.
