OpenRouter is an API gateway and marketplace that provides access to 400+ AI models from 60+/70+ providers (including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, DeepSeek) through a single OpenAI-compatible interface. Founded in 2023 in New York by Alex Atallah (co-founder/former CTO of OpenSea), it handles routing, automatic fallback on provider outages, and consolidated billing via a prepaid credit system. In August 2026, OpenRouter was acquired by Stripe for over $7 billion, following a $1.3 billion valuation in its May 2026 Series B round. The platform serves over 8 million users and more than 250,000 connected apps globally.
