OpenClaw is a self-hosted, open-source AI agent gateway that runs on user-owned hardware and is controlled via messaging platforms (WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Slack, and many more). It connects external LLM APIs (Anthropic Claude, OpenAI GPT, Google Gemini, DeepSeek, local models via Ollama) to a persistent, memory-capable agent with a modular skills ecosystem (ClawHub). The software itself is MIT-licensed and free; real-world costs come from LLM API usage and optional server infrastructure. First published in November 2025 by Peter Steinberger under the name Clawdbot, it was renamed to OpenClaw in January 2026 and became the fastest-growing new repository in GitHub history.
