Microsoft 365 Copilot is a cloud-based AI assistant integrated as a paid add-on into the Microsoft 365 suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, etc.). Organizational context is supplied by Microsoft Graph, which indexes tenant emails, files, calendars, and Teams chats and injects relevant snippets into model prompts via Retrieval-Augmented Generation. The underlying models are primarily GPT-4o and GPT-5 (rolling out) via Azure OpenAI Service; Anthropic Claude became selectable in Copilot Chat in 2026. The product reached General Availability for enterprise customers on November 1, 2023, and has since been continuously extended with agentic and automation capabilities.
