Inkling-Small is an Open Source multimodal language model by Thinking Machines Lab (founded by ex-OpenAI CTO Mira Murati), unveiled on July 30, 2026 as the company's second model, two weeks after the larger flagship Inkling. It is a Mixture-of-Experts model with 276 billion total parameters (12 billion active parameters) that processes text, image, and audio inputs and outputs text. Despite having less than one-third the parameter count of Inkling, it achieves a score of 40 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index (Inkling: 41) and is released with Open Source weights under the Apache 2.0 license.
