Cline is an Open Source AI-coding agent originally released in June 2024 as "Claude Dev" and renamed to "Cline" in October 2024. The tool runs as a sidebar extension in IDEs (VS Code, JetBrains, Cursor, Windsurf, Zed, Neovim) as well as CLI, and can read/edit files, execute terminal commands, and integrate external tools via MCP. Cline itself is free and model-agnostic (30+ LLM providers); users only pay for the AI Inference consumed at the respective provider's rates.
