Inkling is the first in-house developed AI model from Thinking Machines Lab, the startup founded by former OpenAI-CTO Mira Murati. It is a Mixture-of-Experts language model with 975 billion total and 41 billion active parameters that natively processes text, image, and audio inputs and outputs text. The model was released on July 15, 2026 under Apache-2.0 license with Open Source weights, supports a context window of up to 1 Million Token, and offers a balance between cost and performance through an adjustable "Thinking Effort" function. According to Thinking Machines, Inkling is not the most powerful model available, but rather designed as a customizable foundation for Fine-Tuning via the proprietary Tinker platform.
