MAI-Thinking-1 is Microsoft's first in-house reasoning model, announced on June 2, 2026 at the Build conference. The sparse Mixture-of-Experts model with 35 billion active parameters (~1 trillion total) was trained from scratch without distillation from third-party models on licensed data. The model is currently in private preview via Microsoft Foundry and is designed for complex multi-step tasks, extended context analysis, and code generation.
