AutoGen is an open-source framework by Microsoft Research for building multi-agent systems where specialized AI agents collaborate through structured conversations. The current version 0.4 (January 2025) introduced an event-driven architecture and entered maintenance mode by late 2025, with Microsoft promoting the new Agent Framework as its successor.
