Goose is an open-source, general-purpose AI agent originally developed internally by Block (formerly Square) and publicly released in January 2025 under the Apache 2.0 license. It runs natively on the user's machine (macOS, Linux, Windows) as a desktop app, CLI, or embeddable API, built in Rust. Goose connects any LLM to real-world actions—file system, shell commands, tests, external APIs—and extends its capabilities via the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Since December 2025, the project has been governed under the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) at the Linux Foundation.
