Google Effect

The Google effect describes the observation that people remember information less well when they know they can look it up online at any time. Instead, they remember where the information can be found.

Anyone who knows that a piece of information can be found on the internet at any time remembers it less well. This is exactly what is called the Google effect. Memory then no longer stores the thing itself, but the path to it: the app, the website, the search term. This was described in 2011 by psychologist Betsy Sparrow and her team at Columbia University. In their experiments, test subjects typed sentences into a computer. Those who believed the text would be saved were later able to recall it noticeably worse than those who had been told the text would be deleted. A second name for the phenomenon is digital amnesia, meaning digital forgetfulness.

What outsourcing knowledge really costs

The effect sounds at first like pure loss, but it is ambivalent. A mind that doesn’t have to remember phone numbers has capacity free for other things. Division of labor with tools is nothing new: notebooks, calendars, and cookbooks have done the same thing for centuries. What’s new is only how complete and how fast looking things up works today.

It becomes problematic where knowledge is not replaceable. To understand something, you need facts in your head that you can connect with one another. Anyone who doesn’t have dates and connections at hand has a hard time making sense of a new piece of news. Thinking works with what is currently available, not with what could theoretically be retrieved. That’s exactly why memorization in school still serves a purpose despite search engines.

In addition, there is a confusion that researchers repeatedly measure. People consider themselves smarter when they have just looked something up. The feeling of knowing something already arises from easy access. People then overestimate their own knowledge and only notice the gap when the network fails.

Memory as a directory rather than an archive

Psychologists explain the effect with what is known as transactive memory. This means that groups divide up knowledge. In a family, one person knows where the insurance documents are kept, another knows the recipes. No one knows everything, but everyone knows who to ask. Search engines, and today also chatbots, have become such a partner for our brain.

In doing so, the brain makes an economic decision. Storing information costs effort, and information that is rarely needed fades away anyway. If a source is reliable and always accessible, storing it is no longer worthwhile. So instead of the content, the location is stored. In Sparrow’s experiments, participants remembered the names of the folders in which the texts were kept surprisingly well, while the content itself was gone.

An important distinction must be made: the Google effect is not brain damage and not proof that search engines make you stupid. It describes an adaptation to the environment. Whether it is harmful depends on which knowledge is being outsourced. The body of research is also mixed; some replication attempts found the effect to be only weak.

From looking things up to the chatbot

In everyday life, the effect shows up in mundane things. Hardly anyone still knows their own parents' phone number. People no longer remember routes because the navigation device announces them. In an argument over a number, someone automatically reaches for the phone instead of thinking it through.

With AI assistants, the whole thing shifts once again. A search engine provides sources, a chatbot provides a ready-made answer. This outsources not only factual knowledge, but also sorting and formulating. Researchers now speak of cognitive offloading, meaning the handing off of thinking work to machines. Early studies suggest that people question chatbot answers less often than search results.

In news texts, the term therefore often appears in debates about school and exams. It is used as an argument against unrestricted phone use in class, but also as an argument for making exams focus more on understanding rather than on rote recall. A simple rule can be derived from this for one’s own use: whatever you need frequently or need in order to think should be in your head. Everything else can safely stay on the internet.
