Hermes Agent is an open-source, self-improving AI agent by Nous Research (MIT license), released on February 25/26, 2026. It runs fully self-hosted on the user's own infrastructure (Linux, macOS, Windows/WSL2) and is model-agnostic, supporting Nous Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI, and any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. The agent features persistent cross-session memory (FTS5 full-text search with LLM summarization), an automatic skill-creation loop, and 40+ built-in tools covering web search, browser automation, code execution, and file management. It can spawn isolated subagents for parallel workstreams and exposes an OpenAI-compatible /v1/chat/completions API.
