Hermes Agent is an open-source framework by Nous Research for running autonomous, self-improving AI agents entirely on self-hosted infrastructure (server, VPS, or local machine). Its core feature is a closed learning loop that generates reusable "skills" from completed tasks and builds persistent memory of the user, projects, and past sessions. The agent is model-agnostic, working with multiple LLM providers (Nous Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic, local endpoints) and reachable via channels such as Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, email, and CLI. It functions primarily as an agent framework rather than a classic document-management tool, but offers knowledge-management functionality through its skills system, MCP integration, and memory architecture.
