OpenClaw is an Open Source AI agent developed by Peter Steinberger and released since November 2025 (originally under the name Warelay/Clawdbot); since January 2026 the project has been named OpenClaw and is maintained by the nonprofit OpenClaw Foundation. The agent runs as a local/self-hosted "gateway" architecture and connects to messaging channels such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, and Discord as the primary user interface. It can autonomously read/write files, execute shell commands, write code, browse websites, and leverage additional tools through a plugin system called ClawHub (Skills) as well as MCP server integrations.
